Former Beatle Paul McCartney’s estranged wife Heather Mills has been awarded about $50 million in her divorce settlement.

McCartney, 65, married the former model and charity campaigner Mills, 40, in 2002 but they broke up four years later. Their troubled separation was the subject of intense media scrutiny.

In a statement outside London’s High Court, Mills declared she was “glad it’s over” and “it was an incredible result to secure mine and my daughter’s future”.

Included in the settlement, Mills will receive $28 million for herself and $5 million to buy a house in London. The settlement equated to $34,000 for every day of the couple’s marriage.

McCartney will also pay their four-year-old daughter Beatrice’s nanny and school fees which amounts to $70,000 a year.

This comes as a surprise as the couple was not successful in reaching an agreement in court just last month.

The summary judgment stated that Mills had requested $250 million but was only offered $31.5 million.

The judge ruled that McCartney was worth $800 million, while Mills claimed the singer was worth some $1.6 billion. In the end, the judge found no evidence that Sir Paul and his business assets were more than $800 million in all.

Although Mills said she was happy with the outcome, she would be appealing against the publication of the ruling because of the many details of her daughter and herself in it.

Mills also said to the press that she “saved a fortune” by representing herself and encourages all divorcees to do the same, “You can be a litigant in person. It’s not easy, but just make sure you do all your research.”

There were hints that Mills was not completely satisfied with her daughter’s deal, “Beatrice only gets $70,000 a year – so obviously she’s meant to travel B class while her father travels A class, but obviously I will pay for that.”

There was also a buzz about why McCartney’s lawyer Fiona Shackleton left the London High Court with wet hair. Mills made a quip that Shackleton was “baptized in court”. There was no comment on the settlement from ex-Beatle.
